The Nature Film
The Nature Film
We are at a moment in time when the rhythms of modern-day society and technology combined have inadvertently set humanity on a path to becoming the first indoor species. These days we spend an average of 95% of our time indoors, and our kids play freely outdoors for just about four to seven minutes a day. While it’s shocking to see these numbers, the medical community has been researching the impact of them for decades.
What they’ve found is that our new life indoors is exacerbating health conditions like sleep and mood disorders, toxic stress, obesity, diabetes and more. The news isn’t great, but it’s not the end of the story. It’s the beginning of a story that we believe needs to be explored and widely shared—particularly because young people are being hardest hit by the negative impacts of our shift indoors. Better understanding what’s at stake and finding ways to mitigate what journalist Richard Louv calls “Nature Deficit Disorder” is the topic of The Redford Center’s next feature documentary, tentatively titled, “The Nature Film.”
If you suspect, like we do, that honoring our inextricable tie to the natural world can benefit us in significant ways, please consider making a gift in support of The Redford Center's work to expand access to and stewardship of the outdoors.
