Director of Communications (Full-Time)  

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

As we move to meet the urgency of the times, we are looking for team members who are nimble, flexible to change, and who are energized about being a part of our work. We are seeking a Director of Communications who will serve as an integral member of our leadership and growth. This dynamic, driven, individual should have exceptional writing skills, proven marketing and communications expertise, and experience with digital storytelling and media campaign. The position will provide a talented individual the chance to work closely with a strong and diverse staff and a distinguished board to build on The Redford Center’s mission and legacy of environmental storytelling with impact. This position is responsible for planning, directing, and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy in support of a number of dynamic programs, as well as reach the organization’s narrative impact goals. They will also be responsible for overseeing all communications, including programmatic and institutional marketing, while building a strong team and managing external PR and Social Media partners. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizational leadership: Oversee all communications work and collaborate with the leadership team to develop and implement a strategic communications plan that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen impact, and also leverage institutional knowledge and individual engagement from our community. 
  • Management: Develop communications team and manage any staff and external partners on communication-related content and outputs.
  • Brand Development and Management: Develop and refine the organization’s core messages to ensure organizational consistency and adherence to mission, and serve as executive editor for all communications, including website, media and programmatic assets, newsletters, and press releases.  Develop strategies to increase visibility across key audiences and work with our development team to ensure that all messaging for institutional and individual support is tailored, compelling and consistent.
  • Press and media relations: Manage and cultivate relevant media relationships to increase visibility and develop media-driven opportunities that can be leveraged to support The Redford Center.
  • Media/digital strategy: Lead the creation of online content that expands the organization’s reach, engages targeted audience and constituency segments, and leads to measurable action across filmmaker networks and other relevant advocacy communities and organizations. Track and measure the level of engagement over time, and ensure maintenance, accuracy and timeliness of information across all Redford Center digital platforms.
  • Public education: Serves as a spokesperson for the organization, leads efforts to find public engagements and opportunities for increasing public understanding of our work and increasing visibility for organization and partners. Maintains current information and data on trends and media relevant to our industry and mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

The right candidate will be a self-motivated strategic storyteller with a results-driven approach. They will have a proven track record of operational excellence, exceptional written communications and interpersonal skills, and an ability to prioritize diverse demanding responsibilities in a fast-paced, creative environment. 

  • 7+ years of experience in non-profit communications, including experience in all aspects of marketing and branding strategy (e.g. institutional marketing and public relations).
  • 5+ years of experience in supervising staff and/or independent contractors and carrying management level responsibilities such as overseeing a departmental budget, training and managing personnel, and maintaining strategic relationships with media partners.
  • Experience and knowledge of the independent film industry, environmental and climate issues, and/or cultural strategy is ideal.
  • Deep love of writing and ease of writing, and experience crafting and developing communications strategies to engage a wide and diverse audience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-year, multi-stream campaign development and implementation, with a proven track record of creating and maintaining impeccable operational systems.
  • Extensive experience and record of accomplishment in identifying, cultivating, and placing media in various outlets.
  • Extensive experience in and understanding of digital media strategy and the social media landscape and trends, as well as how to build engagement and audience size.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
  • BA or equivalent in journalism, communications, or a related field or equivalent experience. An advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus, but not required. 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position located at The Redford Center’s headquarters in The Presidio in San Francisco, California (with options to work from home during the pandemic). The salary range is $90,000-115,000 commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience. We offer a flexible schedule and an excellent benefits package, including generous paid time off, 100% coverage of employees’ health, dental and vision insurance, commuting expense reimbursement, and participation in a 403b retirement plan.
